Climate Action Newcastle

Climate Action Newcastle is a not for profit and non-aligned community group, working to educate and empower households, government and industry to take climate action. We advocate tried and tested solutions. We are a not-for-profit association, registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission (ACNC).

CAN’s goals are to:

  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions

  • motivate our community to take action towards a clean energy future

  • be a trusted local voice on climate change issues

  • sustain and grow CAN as an inclusive membership organisation

About our projects and campaigns

  • Renew Australia for All

    2025

    Renew Australia for All: CAN joined with community groups, churches and unions across Australia to advocate for investment in affordable, renewable energy.

  • Anti-nuclear campaign

    2025

    Anti-nukes campaign: CAN distributed hundreds of placards and crowd-funded for a billboard and advertising in local papers.

  • Picnic for nature

    2025

    Hunter Community Forum Assembly 6 March: Australia's climate and energy minister Chris Bowen was asked to commit to a $5B funding program for household renewable energy. The forum helped secure a pledge for $2.3B for household batteries.

  • Climate Action Now

    2024

    The Hunter Community Alliance founding assembly on 10 April brought together 863 members of diverse communities, environmental groups, unions and religious organisations to advance the common good and achieve a fair, just and sustainable future for the region

  • Newcastle Emission Reduction Plan

    2024

    CAN finalised the Newcastle Emissions Reduction Plan (NERP) Report and presented it to City of Newcastle.

  • Newcastle Emission Reduction Plan

    2023

    CAN co-convened the Newcastle Climate Action Summit at City Hall on 18 November 2023 to develop the city’s first comprehensive climate action plan.

  • Picnic for nature

    2022

    CAN co-hosted the Picnic for Nature, as a member group of the Nature Conservation Council. More than 50 picnics were hosted across NSW with over 1,000 people attending.

  • Climate Action Now

    2021

    CAN members distributed thousands of placards and bin stickers as part of our support for the Climate Action Now campaign.

  • City of Newcastle Climate Action Plan

    2020

    CAN hosted a workshop to encourage community involvement in developing a plan to reduce the City of Newcastle’s greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Croatian Sports Club

    2019

    “Croation Club Goes Solar” - CAN worked with the Croation Wickham Sports Club to install a large solar system.

  • Future Proofing Australia

    2019

    Dr John Shiel was our guest speaker on “Future Proofing Australia”, in partnership with the Climate Reality Project and Alex Morris.
